Think you can’t support agriculture if you’re not a farmer? Think again.
The truth is, the industry needs people on both sides of the farm gate, whether they’re working in support roles or advocating from the crowd. So how can you help?
- Buy from your local farmer. Shop at farmers markets, u-picks, nurseries, and farm stands. When you buy produce at the grocery store, look for the Fresh From Florida label. That way you’re not only getting locally grown food, you’re also supporting Florida farmers.
- Support agritourism. Venture out to that u-pick, sign up for the farm tour, and put the fall festival on your calendar. These activities provide farms with valuable income while helping the public better understand the hard work behind the food on their tables.
- Support youth in ag. Encourage the spark in students learning about agriculture. This can be as simple as attending a livestock show, bidding at an auction, or buying plants at a fundraiser. A little support can go a long way toward preparing a student for a future in ag.
- Advocate, advocate, advocate. Love a local farm’s produce? Say it! Recommend the farm to others. Share its social media posts. Teach others why supporting agriculture matters.
- Vote. Educate yourself about the issues affecting Florida farmers and ranchers, and support candidates who understand what is at stake in the fight for Florida agriculture.
